“Your Inventory is Full!” in Nika Kupyrova, 2023, HXWXD, Vienna: Verlag für moderne Kunst

“Its lack of variety produces its own simple typology: There are the itinerant ascetics that wander an unfamiliar landscape barehanded and alone. Equipped with nothing more than a modest garb and the will for survival, they rely on skills of rationing and accumulation. Similar, but less monastical, could be the tactical ascetics, masters of un-possession in a resource overabundant, yet highly aggressive, environment, that forces the protagonist to make quick decisions on what to take on, and even more importantly, what to leave behind. Whereas on the other side of the spectrum, stand the indefatigable collectors: sporting a physics-defying collection of gear, consumables and trinkets, for whom nesting and curating are the primary strategies of choice.

These potential protagonists are abstract entities, their personality and outlook defined solely by the items they choose to acquire and the pattern in which they use or consume them; their abstraction makes them prime intermediaries of reciprocal determination — a mere interface, or a flat dimension of congruence, where objects and entities of disparate origin gather and meet, often in wait of a common task, that could put them to use.”
